Barnsley Cemetery Killed when a Wellington aircraft crashed on a training exercise, At 20:20 on 28 September 1943 Wellington HF600 of 17 O.T.U. took off from Turweston, Buckinghamshire for a Bullseye Exercise (a navigational detail simulating a bombing raid on a nominated "target"). Returning to base in the early hours of the following morning, control was lost while orbiting a beacon and the aircraft dived into the ground at 01:14 about 1.5 miles west of Wappenham, Northamptonshire killing its six man crew. Blenheim L1479 (from 8 Squadron) flown by was shot down in flames by Veronese north-west of Laferug. Bombs were jettisoned and the crew returned to base but on touchdown at 17:59 the Lancaster bounced and the pilot opened the throttles in an attempt to go round again. However, the port wing tip dropped and the Lancaster cart-wheeled across the airfield, F/O Billings sustaining injuries that necessitated the amputation of an arm. The two airmen killed are buried in their home towns. The remainder of the crew, it is reported, made a good recovery. It is thought that a technical fault that developed in the aircraft prompted the pilot to abandon this and make a early return to rectify it. During the return DV476 collided with Wellington T27801 from the same unit with both aircraft bursting into flames prior to crashing north west of Finningley airfield. The aircraft had taken off at 18:55 from Shepherds Grove airfield for an exercise that would combine cross-country flying involving H2S as an aid. Within the hour, however, the crew had returned to base with engine trouble. Then, while trying to land the starboard outer cut and at 19:55 the aircraft smashed into the heart of an oak tree on Tothill Farm, near Haughley, three miles from Stowmarket, Suffolk. Barnsley Cemetery On 1st March 1943 the crew of this aircraft were undertaking a navigation exercise and took off from Middleton St.George at 14.20hrs. Half an hour after taking off the aircaft was seen flying level and at a height of around 2,000 feet near Danby Wiske. Without warning to witnesses on the ground the port wing was seen to collapse and the aircraft dive into the ground from around 1,500 feet. There was no time for anyone to escape the aircraft and all on board were sadly killed. An investigation found that a failure in joints in the main spar had resulted in the port mainplane collapsing. The crash site was near High Brockholme, between Danby Wiske, Yafforth and Streetlam. |

Lived at High Winds, South View Rd Married in Barnsley Q2 1931 - 1 Son 2 Daughter Plymouth Naval Memorial Lost when the destroyer HMS Stanley was hit by two of three torpedoes from U-574, at 04.15 hours on 19 December 1941, while on station astern of the convoy HG-76. Immediately sank in the North Atlantic about 330 miles west of Cape Sines, Portugal. Of the complement of 161 officers and men there were 136 dead and 25 survivors. The U-boat was sunk 12 minutes after the attack by HMS Stork (L 81), which later picked up the survivors from HMS Stanley (I 73) together with HMS Samphire (K 128). No aircraft were lost during the strike, but back at Banff while the formation broke over the base preparatory to landing, Mosquito type FBVI serial SZ959 "F" of 248 squadron flown by Flight Lieutenant D.S.L. Crimp and Flying Officer J. Bird collide with RF581 "Y" of 248 squadron (Squadron Leader H.H.K. Gunnis and Warrant Officer A. Mudd) and crashed close to Roughilly Wood near the airfield. Aircraft "Y" of 248 squadron landed safely after sustaining serious damage while both crew members of aircraft "F" were killed in the crash. |
