This particular Mk.III Stirling, tail number W7472 MG-C, was taken on charge by 7 Squadron on 16 February 1942 and had completed 12 operational sorties before being lost. The aircraft was shot down in the sea off Kastricum, Holland by the Luftwaffe night-flyer, Oberleutnant Rudolf Sigmund. The German “Ace” would be credited with a total of 28 victories in 150 missions before he himself was shot down and killed in his Messerschmitt Bf 110 during aerial combat southwest of Göttingen. Plymouth Naval Memorial Lost when the destroyer HMS Stanley was hit by two of three torpedoes from U-574, at 04.15 hours on 19 December 1941, while on station astern of the convoy HG-76. Immediately sank in the North Atlantic about 330 miles west of Cape Sines, Portugal. Of the complement of 161 officers and men there were 136 dead and 25 survivors. The U-boat was sunk 12 minutes after the attack by HMS Stork (L 81), which later picked up the survivors from HMS Stanley (I 73) together with HMS Samphire (K 128). Frank Crossland (C/JX 247837) Royal Navy - HM Submarine Trooper 17 October 1943, aged 27 Chatham Naval Memorial HMS Trooper sailed from Beirut on 26 September 1943 for a patrol in the Aegean Sea off the Dodecanese Islands, including the Leros area. She failed to return on 17th October and was reported overdue on that day. She is presumed lost on German mines East of Leros. The exact date of her loss is not known.
