Lived at The Willows, Tankersley Tankersley (St Peter) Churchyard He was part of the crew of Lancaster NG258 sent on a raid to the synthetic oil refinery at Pölitz near Stettin, Germany. Airborne 16:58 from East Kirkby, it encountered fog over the base in Lincolnshire and was ordered to land elsewhere, the aircraft crashed at 02:50 Scrafield Farm, Winceby near Horncastle. Without regard to his own safety, Coxswain Neilsen insisted on carrying out an internal search of what was left of the fuselage for the missing two men but they were never located.

Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Chênedollé (Calvados), 10 km ENE of Vire. Sgt Humphreys was the only casualty, one was taken prisoner and the other five were able to evade capture by the Germans. |
