Brierley
The Brierley War Memorial is situated in St Paul's Churchyard and commemorates 11 casualties from WWI and 10 from WWII. The inscription reads:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918.

In 1911 Family lived at 16 Conway Street Stairfoot. Mother Sarah Ellen Bird, died in 1912. Martha was his step-mother. Lived at 35 Hill Top, Brierley Married in Barnsley Q4 1924 - 1 Daughter 1 Son Plymouth Naval Memorial Killed when the ship which was off the coast of the Netherlands was attacked by German aircraft. Sqdn 31 August 1943, aged 21 Born in Hemsworth in Q1 1922 Son of Edward and Gladys Edith Collins, of Scarborough, Yorkshire. 20 May 1943 promoted to Pilot Officer from Flight Sergeant, previous service number 1500557 Lived at 127 South Moor Road, Hemsworth Rheinberg War Cemetery The gravestone carries the inscription - To memory ever dear Originally buried at Muenchen Gladback Town Cemetery before being reburied in present location on 12 August 1946 Died with rest of the crew of Wellington JA118 coded QO-G which was lost on a mission to Munchengladbach. Airborne at 00:07 from Skipton-on-Swale and crashed in the target area. Collins and the rest of the crew had been posted to 429 Squadron on 5 March 1943. On 3rd July 1943 the crew were on board Wellington HE802 based at East Moor airfield, which caught fire in the air when it was flying it's first operational flight with the squadron to Cologne when approximately half an hour after take off a fire broke out in the aircraft and an early return and safe landing was made at East Moor. The damage was later repaired. The crew were all later posted to 432 Squadron on 14th August 1943 who were based at Skipton on Swale. |
