Died in an air crash. At 10:54, 7 August 1944 a unidentified aircraft was seen to crash into a low hill approximately four miles west of Station 36, Warazup, Burma on a course of 290 degrees. Liaison type aircraft from Warazup located and circled scene of crash but were unable to identify aircraft which had crashed and burned. A ground search party was dispatched from Warazup. The party was unsuccessful in it`s initial search because of extremely dense jungle growth. Last radio contact with aircraft was established while aircraft was supply dropping at target 71, (96-48E. 25-19W). This contact was with air ground station, Kingpot, at Moran. Aircraft was C-47A # 42-93341.

Immediately sank in the North Atlantic about 330 miles west of Cape Sines, Portugal. Of the complement of 161 officers and men there were 136 dead and 25 survivors. The U-boat was sunk 12 minutes after the attack by HMS Stork (L 81), which later picked up the survivors from HMS Stanley (I 73) together with HMS Samphire (K 128). |

All crew of Lancaster LM386 coded AS-V killed when it was lost on a mission to Stuttgart. Airborne at 21:25 from Kirmington, near Grimsby, the aircraft crashed 00:40 between Aubigny (Yonne) and Taingy, 8 km W from the town of Courson-les-Carrieres. It is probable that LM386 was shot down by Oblt. Herbert Schulte zur Surlage of 5/NJG4 from 4,000 metres over the St. Sauveur area. Shortly afterward zur Surlage and his crew had to bale out of their JU88 G-1, possibly as a result of fire from LM386.

Rozendaal Private Cemetery, Netherlands The gravestone carries the inscription - "Let the last morrow tell, What we have done" Halifax L9603 airborne 20:07 on 7 November from Linton-on-Ouse on a Rover Patrol of the Ruhr with Essen as the objective. Shot down by a night-fighter (Oblt Herbert Lutje,111./NJG1) and crashed 00:02 in the Imbos Forest (Gelderland) near Rozendaal, Holland. Four crew survived to become prisoners of war and three others were killed and are buried in a private Cemetery in the grounds of Rozendaal Castle. |

Welshman 1 February 1943, aged 34 Date of birth 30 April 1908 Birth registered in Barnsley in Q2 1908 (Son of John William and Maggie Bradley) In 1911 living with parents at maternal grandmothers at 75 Dodworth Road. Father was a pawnbrokers assistant, and parents had been married 4 year, 1 child. Lived at 53 High Street, Dodworth Chatham Naval Memorial, United Kingdom At 17.45 hours on 1 February 1943 U-617 fired a spread of four torpedoes at a vessel identified as cruiser of the Dido class and observed two hits and a boiler explosion. The ship capsized and sank by the stern after two hours. The victim was HMS Welshman (M 84) which sank about 45 miles east-northeast off Tobruk, Libya. Eight officers, 144 ratings and 13 passengers, including two civilians and four air crew members that had been badly burnt in a plane crash on Malta. The commander, five officers and 112 ratings were picked up by HMS Tetcott (L 99) and HMS Belvoir (L 32) after five hours and taken to Alexandria. Another six survivors were rescued by small craft from Tobruk. |
