Fletcher and the pilot were killed from the five man crew of Armstrong Whitworth Whitley T4234 crashed on return to a
mission to Le Havre. Airborne at 20:02 22 Aug 41, and crashed 0141 into high ground on Widdale Fell, 2,031 feet amsl, 2 miles NE of Dent, an isolated Westmoreland village, 12 miles E of Kendal.

Short Stirling BF353 coded LS-E airborne at 20:25 from Bourn on a mission to Essen. Crashed in the IJsselmeer, 10 km NW of Harderwijk. The area where the Stirling fell is now the Oosterlijk-Flevoland, an area of reclaimed land.

Portsmouth Naval Memorial
Killed when the light cruiser HMS Emerald was in collision with HM Cruiser Dauntless in Malacca Straits, Malaya and sustained major damage. It was partially flooded in the of forward engine room and structural damage amidships with 14 of ship’s company killed or missing and five injured.

Son of William Henry and Elizabeth Furniss; husband of Elizabeth Furniss, of Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire.
Plymouth Naval Memorial
Lost when the destroyer HMS Matabele was sunk in the Barents Sea. On 8 January 1942, HMS Matabele and another ship were ordered to join the escort of convoy PQ-8. On 17 January, just off Kola Inlet,
HMS Matabele was torpedoed by the German submarine U-454 and sank in two minutes in position 69º21'N, 35º27'E. Even in that short  time, many had managed to abandon ship only to be frozen to death in the icy waters.
