29 May - Battalion marched via Killem reaching Hondschoote before daylight. No. 2 Company and No. 4 Company covering the main bridge (348728). Battalion H.Q. was on the road in rear of No. 4 Company near the Windmill at Krommelhoeck. All day long exhausted British and French Troops poured across our bridges and back the remaining 10 miles to the sea, while enemy bombers passed overhead to deal with the situation on the beaches.
30 May - This day passed quite peacefully except for intermittent shelling. The stream of British and French soldiers grew less. No vehicles were allowed to cross the line of the La Bassee Canal and the far bank appeared to be solid with abandoned motors, all either burning or burnt out. The sluice gates were opened and the country flooded from the sea. Many of the roads were under water and it was difficult to find one’s way across the country as the dykes and canals were undistinguishable.
31 May - this day saw the end of the allied withdrawal across the La Bassee Canal and the arrival of the Germans. Throughout the day there was a good deal of German shelling. The Companies on the Canal Bank also suffered casualties, which included Serjeant Newton of the M.T. attached to No. 4 Company.

The 59th (Staffordshire) Infantry Division was a 2nd Line Territorial Army unit of the British Army under the command of Major-General L. O. Lyne. On June 25th the division, numbering 1,147 officers, 21,575 enlisted men, arrived in Normandy via JUNO Beach and assembled in the Bayeux-Creully area. By July 7th Monty had thrown it into the thick of the fighting of Operation CHARNWOOD where it was placed in the center of the line between 3rd Canadian Division and 3rd British Division during the frontal assault on Caen. This assault saw the first use of carpet bombing in France which, despite being a morale booster, had virtually no impact on the German troop positions north and west of the city. As a result 59th Division walked into a baptism of fire, facing fanatical defenders from 12th SS Hitlerjügend Division, who had occupied the area for a month and had been given plenty of time to prepare strong defenses. 59th Division suffered horrendously in the fields surrounding Galmanche and La Bijude and, despite some initial success, a counter attack soon pushed the 6th North Staffordshires back past the Chateau de la Londe. Died as a PoW in Poland, after being capture in France in 1940 with the BEF. Possibly taken prisoner at Assche, Belgium on 18 May 1940. The 15th/19th Hussars suffered severe casualties in France and Belgium in 1940, with seven officers and 27 other ranks killed, and six officers and 100 other ranks wounded, in addition to many more being taken prisoner. Many of these casualties were sustained by 'A’ Squadron in the battle for Assche in Belgium on 18 May 1940 of which Major J. S. F. Murray’s A Short History of the 15th/19th The King’s Royal Hussars states: ‘The enemy had entered the town in strength with tanks and anti-tank guns. By 2 p.m. Major Cockayne-Frith with Squadron H.Q. and the 3rd, 4th and 5th Troops were surrounded in the town. The Squadron Leader ordered 2nd Troop, which was not involved in Assche, to “go home”, as it could do no good. In fact, the Troop made a gallant attempt to go to his rescue, but without success. On the outskirts of the town Squadron H.Q. came under heavy anti-tank fire, Major Cockayne-Frith and his crew being killed. Captain Mytton with the rest of the force tried to fight his way through the town and after 20 minutes succeeded in retaking nearly half of it. But by that time every Armoured Fighting Vehicle had been knocked out and the fighting developed into individual action by small bodies of survivors. Such a situation could not last long, and the whole force were either killed or taken prisoner, most of the latter being wounded.
