Hoylandswaine

Hoylandswaine War Memorial is situated on Barnsley Road, at the junction of Haigh Lane. The inscription is:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 (NAMES) "IS IT NOTHING TO YOU, ALL YE THAT PASS BY"

Born in Penistone in Q4 1917  
Son of Lionel and Maud Bashforth, of Hoylandswaine, Yorkshire.  Groesbeek War Cemetery  
Killed during the airborne operation at Arnhem, he had previously taken part in the Glider landings in Normandy on D-Day.

Born in Bakewell in  Q3 1922  
Son of John Robert Naylor Thorpe and Leah Hoyland Thorpe, of Oxspring, Yorkshire.
Alamein Memorial  
Wellington IC R1029 S. Target Tobruk. Two crew died in the crash: Sgt D Jackson and Sgt J R N Thorpe, and a third in captivity on 30 October: Sgt J H Bryan. Two were POW: F/Sgt G H Rapson, the pilot, and the rear gunner, Sgt N S Forsythe
