A memorial that used to be located in Stainborough Church, which closed in c1985, is now located in Silkstone - All Saints Church, it reads:

Warrant Officer (Pilot) - Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve - 207 Sqdn. 6 April 1944 , aged 23 Born in Doncaster on 4 November 1920 - Baptised 12/12/1920 at Balby St John. Father Arthur, greengrocer. Mother Minnie Maria. Address 217 Balby Rd, Balby. Son of Arthur and Minnie Maria Senior, of Dinnington, Yorkshire. Known as Ray Lived at Menagerie House, Stainboro Park Toulouse (La Fourguette) Communal Cemetery The gravestone carries the inscription - In loving memory Of my dear son. He died that we might live Was killed with the rest of his crew on a mission to Toulouse. Lancaster mk I serial number ME685 coded EM-C was airborne at 20:20 on 5 April 1944 from Spilsby to attack an aircraft works. Hit by Flak, exploding with great force, and crashed 00:30 6 Apr44 approx 5 km SE of the city. ME685 was delivered to the squadron on 11 March 1944 and was lost less than a month later with a total of only 39 hours. Was previously involved in another accident - On 31st December 1940 was the pilot of this Magister aircraft L8355 was undertaking a training flight involving steep turns and spins. The aircraft was flying too low when a turn was made and a wing-tip struck Ullswater at 12.00hrs. The pilot escaped the sinking aircraft and was rescued but the aircraft sank to the bottom of the lake in the region of Howtown Pier. In 1974 a team of divers and ATC Cadets brought up the front end of the aircraft which was later held by an ATC group in the Windermere area. Superb photographs of this recovery and reconstructed aircraft are shown in Michael Hurst's book of Lakeland air crashes. The tail of the aircraft is rumoured to be still intact at the bottom of the lake. |
