Wombwell

Wombwell War Memorial is located within the grounds of the Church of St Mary on High Street. The inscriptions are:
THE SUPREME SACRIFICE 1914 - 18    1939 - 45

LEST WE FORGET THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF WOMBWELL, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY TRUTH & JUSTICE IN THE GREAT WARS

THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD, AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN, AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Lancaster NG252 coded WS-R was airborne at 07:47 from Bardney to bomb the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Ladbergen. It dived into the ground shortly after becoming airborne, due to loss of power on one or both port engines, killing six of the seven crew.

Killed when Avro Lancaster aircraft crashed on a raid to Stuttgart. Lancaster ME778 with markings of ZN-O was airborne 22:15 on 28 July 1944 from Metheringham. Crashed 01:55 on 29 July 1944 near Durmersheim, a town 9 km NNE of Rastatt and on the ralway leading to Karlsruhe, killing the seven man crew.

Portsmouth Naval Memorial
Lost when the sloop HMS Egret was sunk off the Atlantic coast of Spain. HMS Egret  was the first Allied warship to be sunk by a guided missile. 30 nautical miles  west of Vigo, Spain she was attacked by a squadron of Dornier aircraft, one  of which carried and launched the
Henschel Hs-293A guided bomb which hit sank  Egret in position 42º10'N, 09º22'W, killing 194 of its crew.

night-fighter over Germany, crashing near Quakenbruk, 45km north of Osnabruk at 20:45. Three of the crew survived to become PoW’s and four were killed.
